Ethel Norton

Induction Year: 1986

 

Ethel Norton (1922-2009), a lifelong resident of San Antonio, won two state singles titles while at Jefferson High School and received a full tennis scholarship to High Point College in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In 1953 she was ranked No.1 in Texas in women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. She was ranked as high as No. 17 in the U.S. in women’s singles and No. 3 in women’s doubles. Norton and doubles partner, Althea Gibson, were ranked 5th in the nation and competed against such notables as Maureen Connelly and Doris Hart.
